The Borough of Fair Haven is in Monmouth County, along the Navesink River. Fair Haven became a borough on March 28, 1912, from portions of Shrewsbury Township. Portions of the borough were exchanged with Red Bank on June 17, 1957. The special character of present day Fair Haven is rooted in its heritage as a small community closely linked to the Navesink River.
The Fair Haven Public Schools includes the following schools (with 2005-06 enrollment data from the National Center for Education Statistics): The Viola L. Sickles School (PreK-3, 416 students) and the Knollwood School (grades 4-8, 579 students). Students in public school for grades 9-12 attend Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, together with students from Rumson. The high school is located in Rumson and had an enrollment of 945 students in the 2005-06 school year.
As of the census of 2000, there were 5,937 people, 1,998 households, and 1,658 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,559.3 people per square mile (1,372.6/km2). There were 2,037 housing units at an average density of 1,221.2/sq mi (471.0/km2).
